2014 MSHSAA Baseball Championships

Two weeks ago, I made my second visit to T.R. Hughes ballpark in O’Fallon, Missouri for the second year the Missouri State High School Baseball State Championships were held there. Last year, we had a week full of rain that postponed several games and we got drenched. This year however, we only had rain the last day, and the rest of the week was beautiful weather. Below are some of my frames from the week, including a group of photos from a game feature I shot for the News-Leader.

For the second year in a row, the Springfield Catholic Fighting Irish baseball team made it to the State Championship game. My job for the Springfield News-Leader was to provide coverage of the Irish seeking a state championship win. They ended up defeating the Christian Eagles 8-3 to claim the Class 3 title.

Feature Portrait: Southwest Missouri Baseball

A week and a half ago or so, I got a call asking if I would shoot a portrait of one of the better local high school baseball players for the News-Leader. Since I am always looking to do a nice sports portrait, and come up with new ideas for these, I was pretty excited. We were supposed to have bad weather, so I was actually excited to do some shooting inside a netted batting cage or something, but the weather held off and we were able to shoot outside. I had roughly ten minutes to set up, shoot and get off the field before they thew the tarp on the infield. After shooting a few ideas on the mound, I moved to the dugout to create a few more frames. Here are a few of the images of Logan-Rogersville Wildcats pitcher Jacob Schlesener, who is committed to the University of Arkansas.

2013 Texas League All-Star Game

Two weeks ago, I traveled down to Springdale, Arkansas for the Springfield News-Leader to cover the Springfield Cardinals participating in the 2013 Texas League All-Star game at Arvest Ballpark. These event are fun to cover as we, as photographers, get a relaxed look at some of the best players in the league. Most players are enjoying their time off at the all-star festivities and make it all about the fans. This year, I tried another home plate remote for the home run derby. I got some cool images, and look forward to trying new things next year.

A Wet Week: 2013 MSHSAA Baseball State Tournament

Springfield Catholic third baseman Matt Tipton (4) reacts quietly in the dugout after losing the 2013 MSHSAA class 3 championship game against the Fatima Comets at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on May 31, 2013 in O’Fallon, Missouri.

Two weeks ago, the 2013 Missouri high school state baseball tournament got underway at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, Missouri. Unfortunately, as the title of this post suggests, it became known as “wet week in O’Fallon”. In the seven days of the tournament (which was only supposed to last five), we saw more than six inches of rain fall on the field. I helped the amazing grounds crew at the ballpark tarp and de-tarp the field about 15 times over the course of the week, which was a cool and new experience for me. Maybe something to add to the resume down the road perhaps? Either way, I love this week of baseball every year. I get a chance to see the best teams in the state battle it out for the elusive state title. The thing about shooting the state championships is that every photographer is always looking for that ONE emotional shot. The image showing a team either elated or entirely broken. Because of my position with MSHSAA, I am usually the first one on the field and am blessed to have unique access to many shots. Here are a few of my favorite images from the week, but you can see my entire take at the link HERE.

And this is how I felt at the end of the week:

Springfield Cardinals take 3 of 4 from Drillers

The Springfield Cardinals have been continuing their winning ways from last year’s championship season by collecting a hold on first place in the Texas League’s North Division. The Tulsa Drillers, AA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, visited Hammons Field to take on the Springfield Cardinals in a four game series. The Cardinals, won three of the four games in front of large crowds each night. One reason for the large crowds was that St. Louis Cardinals first baseman and former Springfield Cardinal, Matt Adams, was in town for a rehab assignment. Also, there was a giveaway featuring the Texas League Championship replica rings, a fan favorite. The Cardinals will host Frisco and Midland next week.

Baseball Bears Sweep Northwestern

Baseball is back! This past weekend, the Missouri State Bears hosted the Northwestern Wildcats for the opening series of the 2013 season. The Bears baseball team is looking very strong thus far in the season, and is sporting a 10-3 record. The Wildcats came into Springfield at 4-2 but after the three game series, Northwestern is now one game below .500. Congratulations to the Baseball Bears, and to the great start of their season.

What’s Been Going On?

It has been a busy several weeks as the baseball season has started here in Springfield, Missouri. I’ve shot four games of Missouri State Baseball at Hammons Field. It has been a blast. Between the Western Illinois Leathernecks, Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, and the Missouri State Bears, I have walked away with some great images of not only digital but film as well. I hope to have a blog post here soon about my film project of views on baseball. Below are a few samples of my recent endeavors within the walls of Hammons Field.

This morning, I also had the opportunity to photograph a good friend of mine, Steph, who happens to be the Missouri State Bears Field Hockey Goalie. It was an early morning shoot with us arriving at Plaster Sports Complex at 7:00 a.m. We got set up with the way that I had envisioned the shots. Looking back, I would have wanted to be a bit earlier, but that is all hindsight. Here are a few of my favorites from the edits.

And my tribute to a good friend and fellow photographer, Jerome Nakagawa, who worked for the Springfield News-Leader when he shot a similar photo of Steph. I like his version much better.

For those interested, here is a set-up shot.

Thanks to Steph for being willing to do this shoot with me, and to my awesome wife for helping me carry and set up gear and lights. Your’e awesome.
