2014 MSHSAA Baseball Championships

Two weeks ago, I made my second visit to T.R. Hughes ballpark in O’Fallon, Missouri for the second year the Missouri State High School Baseball State Championships were held there. Last year, we had a week full of rain that postponed several games and we got drenched. This year however, we only had rain the last day, and the rest of the week was beautiful weather. Below are some of my frames from the week, including a group of photos from a game feature I shot for the News-Leader.

For the second year in a row, the Springfield Catholic Fighting Irish baseball team made it to the State Championship game. My job for the Springfield News-Leader was to provide coverage of the Irish seeking a state championship win. They ended up defeating the Christian Eagles 8-3 to claim the Class 3 title.

Feature Portrait: Southwest Missouri Baseball

A week and a half ago or so, I got a call asking if I would shoot a portrait of one of the better local high school baseball players for the News-Leader. Since I am always looking to do a nice sports portrait, and come up with new ideas for these, I was pretty excited. We were supposed to have bad weather, so I was actually excited to do some shooting inside a netted batting cage or something, but the weather held off and we were able to shoot outside. I had roughly ten minutes to set up, shoot and get off the field before they thew the tarp on the infield. After shooting a few ideas on the mound, I moved to the dugout to create a few more frames. Here are a few of the images of Logan-Rogersville Wildcats pitcher Jacob Schlesener, who is committed to the University of Arkansas.

Hoops, Hoops, Hoops: Two Weeks of Basketball

I cannot remember the last time I photographed so much basketball in such a short amount of time. When March comes in Missouri, it really does turn into a time of Madness, as photographers from around the state come to Columbia for the state basketball tournament. For two straight weeks, I found myself on the hardwood at Mizzou Arena and the Hearnes Center on the campus of the University of Missouri. All in all, these two weeks of the 2014 Show-Me Showdown were filled with great basketball, fun time with friends, and working for some great clients.

Searching for an Icy Feature

Southwest Missouri got their first solid snowfall of the year this past weekend, and it was a big one. The skies dumped as much as 10 inches of snow over the area in a two day period. The News-Leader asked if I could go to Ozark and Nixa, South of Springfield, to document how the snow was affecting people, and to get some “pretty” photos. As I slid down icy streets in search of something to take a photo of, I found myself in the same position as some of my subjects (the ones that were actually outside). By the end of it all, I was cold, exhausted, and ready to be inside with family. All it all, it was a blast, and I love being able to photograph the people of the local community.

Friday Night Lights: Week 2 – Hillcrest Hornets at Glendale Falcons

The Hillcrest Hornets came into Lowe Stadium at Glendale High School ready to run, and run they did. Hillcrest’s quarterback Matt Rush had quite the night racking up 108 yards on 11 carries, and was also 10-for-19 passing with 152 yards. He led the Hornets to a 43-0 victory over the Falcons.

Friday Night Lights: Parkview Vikings at Kickapoo Chiefs

Last night marked the first high school football game of the season. I was assigned to cover the Parkview Vikings as they took on the Kickapoo Chiefs in a cross town rivalry to start off the Ozark Conference season. Both teams were hoping for a good start to their season by jumping right into conference play. Kickapoo started the game off sluggish, but by the third quarter, had a firm grip on the control of the game. Here are a few frames of game action from the first high school game  of the season.

2013 Texas League All-Star Game

Two weeks ago, I traveled down to Springdale, Arkansas for the Springfield News-Leader to cover the Springfield Cardinals participating in the 2013 Texas League All-Star game at Arvest Ballpark. These event are fun to cover as we, as photographers, get a relaxed look at some of the best players in the league. Most players are enjoying their time off at the all-star festivities and make it all about the fans. This year, I tried another home plate remote for the home run derby. I got some cool images, and look forward to trying new things next year.
