Week’s Work: September 16-20

It was another busy week here in Gwinnett County as the fair came into town, the Atlanta Falcons were playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and there is always some high school football action to be had. While I could have done a blog post on each of these, especially the Falcons game and the fair, below are some of my favorite frames from the week.

Chiefs Outlast Browns to Stay Undefeated

If someone would have told me at the beginning of the 2013 NFL regular season that the Kansas City Chiefs would be 8-0 and the only undefeated team left, I would of never believed you, and would have probably called you crazy. Well, I guess the joke is on all of us, because that is the reality. Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns marks many firsts for me. It was my first trip to Kansas City for Getty Images, my first trip to Arrowhead Stadium, my first time shooting and (obviously) my first time shooting the Chiefs. (It was also my first time eating some KC BBQ- Thanks David and John!) Either way, it was an extremely enjoyable experience and everyone involved was very welcoming of the new guy in the photo room. The Chiefs were moving the ball effectively and looked like they were going to handily take care of the Browns, taking a 20-10 lead into the half. But the Browns were not going away, and would score seven points and holding the Chiefs to a field goal late in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs would hang on to win 23-17 in front of 74,307 fans.

11.18.- NY Jets at STL Rams

The Jets made their way to St. Louis to take on the Rams in the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday. I wanted to try something different this week during the player introductions. Most photographers shoot the introductions with a long lens and shoot the players coming out from under the stands to take their place on the field. Over the past few weeks, I had noticed the smoke and the lights used in the tunnels as the players run out. So, I shot just to the left of the tunnel and wanted to shoot something a bit closer and wider. I think that there are definitely a few ways to improve those photos, but it is a start. Here is part of my take from the game.

Welcome to Lambeau South

I never would have guessed that when I showed up to the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday, there would be so many “cheese heads” and other green and gold packer gear to be seen around and in the dome. It wasn’t until I saw the sign above that I realize I wasn’t in the dome anymore. I had entered Lambeau South. I had the pleasure of working with Getty Staffer Doug Pensinger to cover the Packers and Rams. Doug was incredibly easy to work with and it was great to meet just one more photographer who is passionate about their work. The game went as expected. The Rams would lose to the Packers by 10 and fall to 3-4 on the season.

The Roar of the Dome: Seattle Seahawks vs. St. Louis Rams

I am no stranger to the Edward Jones dome. Over the past three or four years, I have been shooting all of the high school state football games there and have always enjoyed the facility. However, this past Sunday was different because it was the first regular season NFL game I had ever covered. The dome was loud, even though half of the upper bowl was empty. The Seattle Seahawks were in town to take on the St. Louis Rams and both teams put on a great show. The Rams would defeat the Seahawks 19-13 with the help of Greg Zuerlein, who kicked 4 field goals on the day (3 longer than 45 yards). I didn’t feel as comfortable shooting this game for some reason, but I came out with a few shots I liked and I look forward to making my return back to the Dome on the 21st of October when the Rams take on the Green Bay Packers.

Are You Ready For Some Football? (Ravens vs. Rams)

In a post earlier in the year, I said that I would hope that this would be a year of firsts. In many ways it has been. I got my first “official” photographer gig, I photographed my first celebrities, and now, I photographed my first NFL game. Last Thursday, I photographed the Baltimore Ravens as they took on the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. I have to admit that this game was particularly exciting for me to photograph because, being from Washington D.C., Baltimore happens to be “my” team. I thought long and hard about how I wanted to approach this game as I was going to be the only Getty Images photographer there and wanted to make sure I got some great action. Baltimore made it clear that they wanted to rest their star players and they started their second team. Overall, a great experience, and I look forward to being apart of the two man “Getty Team”  later this season at the Edward Jones Dome.
